us Who He Is
Letter
from the Editor:
GOD, out of His infinite grace, introduces Himself to people in the Quran in a fully detailed manner [1]. Therefore, we can not make up phrases of statements from ourselves in order to describe Him. We should always remember that GOD’s word is complete. GOD commands us to call him “GOD” or “The Most Gracious”; whichever name you call Him by, it Him belongs the most beautiful names [2]. In chapter 59, verse 21-24, GOD after describing the awesomeness of the Quran, informs that He is The Most Dignified. It is below His Dignity to call Him other that what He tells us to call Him. Of course, the human being with his/her minute knowledge is not able to describe GOD. This is why GOD taught Adam “words” by which he could redeem himself [3]. In other words, Adam could not by himself initiate these words. We know that for us these words are contained in the “Opener”. Let me bring you an example. In the opener, GOD, in His infinite grace and wisdom has chosen to introduce Himself as “THE MOST GRACIOUS, THE MOST MERCIFUL”. If we made the words up, we probably would have called Him by some other names which would have been inappropriate.
GOD commands us in the Quran to constantly magnify Him [4]. He also tells us in the Quran how to go about doing this. GOD calls Himself “AL-KABEER”, “The Supreme”. As GOD increases our knowledge through His word, the Quran, we should be more and more careful to obey Him and submit to Him. We should not insist on ignorance and continue to utter phrases for historical rather that Quranic reasons.
A historical phrase which has been used in describing GOD is “Allaho-akbar” or “GOD is greater”. We do not find anywhere in the Quran, GOD describing Himself as “akbar” or “greater”. However, as mentioned above, GOD calls Himself “AL-KABEER”. We accordingly, should obey GOD and call Him with His “Most Beautiful Names” and magnify Him the way He tells us to magnify Him. We should therefore say “ALLAHO-ALKABEER” and not “ALLAHO-AKBAR”. One may reason that because everyone says it we should say it too. Remember that GOD informs us that the Quran is complete and fully detailed and in this “complete” word of GOD, He is informing us that He is the knower of all secrets and declarations and He is The Supreme (AL-KABEER), The Most High.
GOD refers to Himself as “The Supreme” in the following verses in the Quran:
Chapter 13, verse 9
Chapter 22, verse 62
Chapter 31, verse 30
Chapter 34, verse 23
Chapter 40, verse 12
Note that the last reference of GOD as “The Supreme” in 40:12 coincides with one of the references to GOD ALONE. The reader should verify the above references for him/herself.
